DOVER WHITE CLIFFS OPEN
17th / 18th SEPTEMBER 2016
26 swimmers from Sheerness Swimming Club took part in the Annual Dover White Cliffs Open Event over the weekend, competing against clubs from Dover, Folkstone, Hythe, Hernebay, Faversham and Thanet.
Overall the club enjoyed a very successful trip, coming away with 32 top 3 finishes (9 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals). On top of that, 8 swimmers gained their all-important Kent qualifying times in the process (3 automatic and 10 consideration times)
All the swimmers did both themselves and the club proud, the team spirit was excellent and the behaviour exemplary. There were personal best gained by every swimmer taking part as well as a few club records along the way.
Robert Winch, Lois Pieri and Katie Evans all came away with 2 gold medals each, Rob doubling up in the 50mtr and 100mtr Fly, Katie doing the same in the breastroke and Lois matching them in the 50mtr Breastroke and Fly. Alex Mackenzie struck gold in 200mtr breastroke, Pierson Timmons doing the same in the shorter 100mtr breastroke and Jessica Sheather finished on top in the 50mtr Fly.
Pierson also managed to gain the Kent automatic qualifying time in both the 50mtr Freestyle and 50mtr Breastroke as well as a consideration time for his 100mtr Breastroke which was some achievement.
Jessica had the biggest collection over the weekend adding 3 silver medals and 2 bronze, Rob completed his haul with a silver and 2 bronze, Alex added 2 silvers and a bronze, Pierson and Lois both adding a bronze to their collection.
Jade Boreham had an excellent event, medalling 4 times with 1 silver and 3 bronze, Lori Secrett grabbed 1 silver and 1 bronze, Ella Logan and Haidn Hopkins took silver and both Daniel Pieri and Liam Secrett took a bronze.
Swimmers gaining Kent qualifying times over the weekend were –
Alex Mackenzie (Automatic 50mtr Breast, Consideration 50mtr Freestyle, 200mre Breast)
Rob Winch (Consideration 50mtr Breast and 50mtr Back)
Cameron Bailey (Consideration 50mtr Breast)
Liam Secrett (Consideration 100mtr Breast)
Lori Secrett (Consideration 100mtr Breast)
Katie Evans (Consideration 50mtr Breast)
Daniel Pieri (Consideration 50mtr Back)
It was a chance for some of the swimmers in the club to take part in their first ever ‘skins’ event which required qualification by finishing in the top 6 in each age groups Individual Medley events. Robert Winch, Alex Mackenzie, Jessica Sheather, Jade Boreham, Liam Secrett and Haidn Hopkins all managed to qualify.
These races certainly proved to be exciting and although none of the swimmers who qualified came away victorious they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The event allowed for some of the more inexperienced swimmers to take part in their first open, Tillie Ballard, Masie Rogers, Ella Sirman, Robert Pym and Ella Thomas all taking part for the first time. Kyah Hopkins, Sophia Stephenson, Jasmine Down, Ellie Pieri, Darcie Timmons, Scarlett Gebbie, Katherine Berry and Joe Rowbottom made up the rest of the squad and certainly did not disgrace themselves, all setting new PB’s in at least 1 of their many swims.
The next event for the club will be a trip to the Olympic Park on 24th September for a 2 hour training session at the aquatics centre.
